Blue Mountain Soay SheepBlue Mountain Soay Sheep is dedicated to the preservation and conservation of this unique, primitive breed and we enjoy promoting this beautiful link to the past. We manage a flock of 35-40 breeding animals and raise quality, healthy, registered Soay sheep for a variety of uses: FINE FLEECE WITHOUT SHEARING - PASTURE MAINTENANCE & BRUSH CONTROL - ORGANIC/GRASS-FED LAMB - BEAUTIFUL & ENTERTAINING (we call them “estate sheep”!) – SALE OF BREEDING STOCK & WETHERS. Soays are the only breed of livestock we raise on our farm. Why? They thrive in our cool, foggy coastal climate found in the Olympic Mt foothills which is similar to the climate of their homeland. Soay sheep are aloof, wary, and graceful and deer-like in appearance with fleeces that may be tan, fawn, shades of brown, or black. Most Soay sheep have light markings on the belly, rump, over the eyes and under the tail and jaw. They have short clean tails, shed their wool, and lamb easily. Their hooves do not generally require trimming. They are hardy disease-resistant animals, shy yet curious, clever and intelligent. Rams develop beautiful full curl horns and often a striking mane or bib of long darker hair that lends an elegant appearance. Ewes are horned or naturally polled. They are delightfully independent and free of many husbandry problems, manage on more meager pastures, and actually improve pastures by consuming Scotchbroom, berry vines, and woody plants as well as grass. Our Blue Mountain Soay foundation flock animals are registered with MNSBAR (Miniature and Novelty Sheep Breeders Association Registry) and with SOA (Soays of America Conservancy). We also have some RBST (Rare Breeds Survival Trust) lineage from the United Kingdom. Our flock is registered in both British and American registries as "Blue Mountain Soay Sheep".
