Southern Oregon Soay Farms

Breeders of British Registered Soay Sheep.

Our focus of interest is the conservation of British Soay sheep. The British Soay is the only sheep outside of the UK to be registered with the Rare Breeds Survival Trust and is considered reciprocal (interchangeable) with Soay in Great Britain. Our breeding program is based on the understanding that the Soay’s value is not its rarity, but its wide genetic diversity and the preservation of this diversity is our primary goal. Soay sheep are easy to care for, delightful to live with and ideal for people who have little experience with sheep but who are interested in a rewarding international conservation project. We encourage anyone who thinks they may have such an interest to contact us. We love talking about these little creatures and how we can all help to preserve this historic treasure.

Researching the history of the Soay, both British and North American, has also been a large part of our program since 1996. To that end we have traveled to Canada, Scotland, including St. Kilda, England and Wales. Through these travels we have been able to trace the origins of the American Soay which has added tremendously to our understanding of this breed. We continue our research into the history of the Foundation Registered Soay in the UK.

We are members of the RBST, The Open Flock Book Project, The Soay Sheep Society (UK) and the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy. Our sheep are registered in the Combined Flock Book of the RBST and we have participated in the USDA Voluntary Scrapie Program since 1999. Visitors are always welcomed.
