Wind River FarmCaution: Soay sheep will rock your world. I first became interested in Soay because we had a small 2 acre mini-farm at the base of Mt. Hood in Oregon – 1.5 of it vertical covered with blackberries. Being an organic gardener and bird lover and having spent months of every year on my Grandma’s farm my first thought was having a natural control for the blackberries rather than a chemical solution.
What I found after months of research and preparation was Soay Sheep. The added bonus was that I could also be helping to preserve a threatened breed. These wonderful animals are everything you are looking for – and more. We owned our initial flock of Soay for 3 months before we realized that we were now sharing our space with creatures that were much more than we thought sheep could be – and that we’d need more room so we could have more sheep. We are now on a five acre “gentlewoman’s farm” – still more vertical than flat, still more blackberries than grass, lots of rocks, maples – Soay love maple leaves in the fall – and Quilcene Bay on Puget Sound framed by cedars. And we have more Soay. Our breeding goals are focused on horns – I love the sweep of the horns – they look like fairy wings, white markings, and spinning wool – both light, browns and black. We are also working to build both a British RBST flock and an American Soay flock – building the best genetic base we can to contribute to the Soay community of both established enthusiasts and new flock owners. Our sheep and their ancestry are all tracked through the Open Flock Book project and certificates of their pedigrees will be provided at sale. Wind River Farm also participates in the federal voluntary scrapie flock certification program. |
